Hearing aid stigma vs. reality

The reasons for getting hearing aids are much more compelling than the ones for not getting them.

It’s ironic that one of the biggest reasons people don’t consider hearing aids when they know they aren’t hearing well is the stigma they’ll look old or frail.

Studies have shown that when hearing levels decline, the incidence of cognitive impairment increases, along with a cascade of negative health effects, including loss of spatial awareness and increased fall risk. Hearing loss triggers auditory deprivation, when part of the brain that interprets sounds atrophies.

Also, the devices have become much smaller over the past several years and are barely detectable. It seems every time a manufacturer comes out with a new model, it’s smaller.

Another misconception about hearing aids is the quality of hearing is artificial, inadequate and not worth the trouble. Not true. New AI technology has driven clearer sound perception capabilities that are now making their way to today’s hearing aids.

Cost is another fear factor, and we understand that. We work with hand-picked manufacturers in our field to offer dependable economy lines to high-end lines.

We interface with patients’ insurance companies and Medicare plans to make sure they get the biggest bang for their buck. We also offer financing and bundle into monthly payments the cost of the aids and maintenance.

Hearing decline is a very slow process. We often see people put off addressing it because they get stuck in the mindset they can get by. Or they tell us their friends complain about their aids so they’re not interested. This is a shame since every patient is unique. Their situation could be completely different from yours.

Bottom line? The reasons for getting hearing aids are much more compelling than the ones for not getting them. We can help.

Hearing Loss is Not Normal Aging

The average amount of time a person waits to have their hearing tested after perceiving hearing loss is seven years.

I feel that as a sense, our hearing goes under-appreciated, under-recognized and under the radar.

One of the reasons I became an audiologist is to help people meaningfully connect with the people they love and the world around them by helping them hear better. When we hear well, we can engage in conversation with ease—no more listening fatigue.

Here’s a well-known statistic: The average amount of time a person waits to have their hearing tested after perceiving hearing loss is seven years.

You would never wait seven years if you experienced vision loss.

Even “mild” hearing loss can dramatically affect our ability to communicate and understand speech. I liken the mechanics of hearing to a muscle. If you don’t use it, you lose it. It needs to be fully functioning to send your brain the adequate stimulus to decipher speech and other sounds.

Patients often tell me they accept their hearing loss because they feel it’s a normal part of growing old. It’s not. I routinely evaluate patients in their 90s with perfect hearing.

We recommend a baseline screening by age 50 or earlier if you suspect hearing loss. It only takes 20-40 minutes within a sound-treated booth to pinpoint your thresholds.

A yearly hearing test is covered by Medicare and most insurances. We run a full benefits assessment for our patients so they know in advance what will be covered if they end up needing hearing devices.

WHEN SOMEONE HAS HEARING LOSS

To really spread cheer and goodwill, the best gift you can give this person is gently suggesting they get their hearing tested.

As we’re about to enter the most wonderful time of the year, with holiday music in the air, toasting around the table and cherished family get-togethers, I hope people are sensitive to those who may be suffering from hearing loss.

You may notice a loved one isn’t keeping up with the conversation or is sitting off by themself isolating or avoiding family parties altogether. With background noise, several conversations going on at once and louder-than-usual decibel levels, these environments are especially problematic for a person who is struggling.

If you notice someone isn’t picking up on conversation, help them socialize by taking them to a quiet corner to chat. Make sure there’s enough lighting so they can detect visual cues, then face them directly when speaking.

To really spread cheer and goodwill, the best gift you can give this person is gently suggesting they get their hearing tested. Focusing less on loss and more on the positives like staying connected to family will ensure better outcomes. Maybe go with them to the appointment and take them out for lunch to celebrate.

The average length of time a person waits to get their hearing tested after noticing loss is seven years, which to us is not acceptable. The cost of unchecked hearing loss is steep.

It puts a strain on the brain and can lead to things like social isolation, depression, cognitive decline and even early onset dementia.

The best way to say “I love you” is by helping a family or friend get the most out of life. We can test and assess them and, if needed, fit them for hearing aids in a few weeks so they won’t miss a thing.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating our first five years in business, and you as a patient or community member.”

Fellow audiologist Dr. Julia Saxon says their work is to change this statistic: The average time a person waits from when they notice hearing loss until they see an audiologist is seven years.

“That’s not acceptable,” she says. “The sooner a patient comes to see us, the better the outcomes.”

While they say there isn’t a magic age to get your hearing tested, the time for a test is whenever you are struggling to hear. They test and treat school age children through older adults.

“We are not a hearing aid store. There’s no pressure here to buy them,” says Dr. Barbur. “Our intent is to educate you about your hearing loss and provide you the best solutions to meet your unique hearing needs.”

The doctors caution people against buying over-the-counter hearing aids, which in most cases are not suitable for the person’s loss.

Amanda’s Family Hearing recently joined the Cochlear Provider Network (CPN) to offer more options to patients, including alternatives for those who are not receiving enough benefit from their hearing aids.

As part of the CPN, the practice partners with University Hospitals Surgery Center, where the implant is placed. Drs. Barbur and Saxon perform pre-surgical candidacy testing, activate the implants after placement and provide ongoing care to help ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

Another issue they specialize in is managing tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, which is often related to hearing loss.

“It’s important to uncover the cause, which could be neurological, physiological, diet, stress or a cardiovascular abnormality,” she says.

The audiologists are involved in the community and enjoy visiting local senior centers to do complimentary hearing assessments. If you or a loved one is in a senior care facility and they haven’t been there, feel free to ask the activities director to reach out to them for a visit.

AURACAST: THE FUTURE OF HEARING

Breakthrough advancements in technology are always happening in the exciting field of audiology— and Auracast is nothing short of that.

The next generation of assistive listening—Auracast broadcast audio from Bluetooth—wirelessly transmits a high-quality level of audio to people with Auracast enabled hearing aids, ear buds, smartphones and more. Unlike traditional Bluetooth, Auracast allows an audio transmitter to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of receivers. This is an exciting step forward for those with hearing loss.

Although Auracast will probably not begin to make an appearance until at least 2027 it will be a game changer for people with hearing loss in places like airports, concert halls, movie theaters, conference centers, places of worship and other public venues where hearing may be difficult. Hearing aid manufacturers are already making aids that are equipped to support it. Thanks to the buzz about the technology, some of our patients are already asking about Auracast, and when they get new hearing aids are opting for these devices.

Auracast not only allows public sharing of audio, but it also allows people to privately share audio as well such as music or podcasts. For the receiver, finding the specific signal they would like to connect to is as easy as finding a WiFi connection. Some venues are already planning to have a QR code for people to scan for instant connection. Once an Auracast broadcast is selected, the receiver is provided all the information needed to join.

As audiologists, we’re always looking for ways to help our patients connect better to their world and each other. We can’t wait for Auracast to help accomplish that.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT HEARING

World Hearing Day is Sunday, March 3. My practice raises awareness and educates people in our community by attending public events, health fairs and senior centers. To reach more people, I thought I’d use this column to answer some common questions:

Why are hearing aids so expensive?

Before a device comes to market, it must go through years of research and development. They include a warranty that covers repairs, loss and damage, typically for three to four years. Most importantly, the cost includes ongoing professional services, including fitting and orientation, and routine appointments for device maintenance that are essential to keep them in good working order.

Are over-the-counter hearing aids as good as professional ones?

Absolutely not. Devices purchased OTC are suitable for mild losses at best. OTC devices are often inappropriately fit, either over or under amplifying sounds. Since hearing loss can occur gradually, people don’t realize how severe their loss is. Before considering an OTC de-vice, always consult an audiologist.

How long do hearing aids last?

Several years depending on how well they are maintained. I’ve seen some over 15 years old still functioning. But the more important question is how often should you upgrade to newer technology. Hearing aids are constantly advancing, which is why many people upgrade every four to five years. Repairs also become more expensive as hearing aids age, so a newer set can be more economically beneficial.

Are hearing aids covered by insurance?

Many plans do cover hearing aids. While Medicare does not, it does cover testing. Our office always verifies your benefit for you prior to your appointment.

HOW BRAD REGAINED HIS HEARING

Procrastinating about getting your hearing tested is something I, along with my fellow doctors of audiology Kevin Burkitt and Julia Saxon, encounter often. People recognize they have hearing loss, but don’t realize what a negative impact it can have on their quality of life, often leading to depression, isolation, cognitive loss and physical decline.

           Meet Brad W. of Parma.

Even though he was in kindergarten when his moderate hereditary hearing loss was first detected, the family decided not to correct it with hearing aids.

He did well in school and became a firefighter and paramedic. Five years ago, at the age of 43, he noticed that the loss was becoming an issue in his life.

“I was starting to bury my head in my phone to avoid interacting with others and it was becoming a real communication issue. My lip-reading and contextual inferences were only taking me so far,” says Brad. “It was also becoming clear that I was a real pain to my wife, family and coworkers, making them repeat things all the time.”

Although he was concerned about the stigma of wearing hearing aids, thinking they were “for old people,” he came to me for testing and I diagnosed his loss and fit him with the latest Bluetooth-enabled hearing devices.

“I heard sounds and tones I’ve never heard before in my life,” he says. “It was an incredible experience. I was expecting people to notice and give me a hard time about wearing them, but everyone in my life has been so supportive. Whenever someone with hearing loss notices my aids and asks me about them, I tell them not to waste time and get them as soon as possible. You don’t realize how much you’re missing until you get it back.”

FOR PEOPLE WITH SEVERE TO PROFOUND HEARING LOSS, A COCHLEAR IMPLANT CAN BE LIFE-CHANGING

Amanda’s Family Hearing was founded with the mission of helping others by improving their quality of life through better hearing.

It’s not surprising that Founder Dr. Amanda Barbur recently decided to undergo additional training on cochlear implants so she could help those with severe to profound hearing loss who might not be gaining enough benefit from amplification. “I just didn’t want to stop with hearing aids. I wanted to offer more options to these patients,” Amanda says.

           What are the Causes?

There are several causes of hearing loss in adults, which affects 6.6 million Americans over the age of 12. One of the most common is age-related hearing loss (presbycusis), which is usually the result of damaged hair cells in the inner ear that translate sound vibrations into electrical signals for the brain. Exposure to loud sounds, medications, head trauma or certain viral and bacterial infections can also damage the hair cells. Hearing loss can also be genetic.

           Sending the Signals Again

A cochlear implant allows sound to bypass the damaged part of the ear and stimulate the auditory nerve properly. The signal is then sent to the brain for processing. This, in essence, is what allows you to hear.

“As a member of the Cochlear Provider Network, we work closely with the otologist who surgically implants the cochlear device,” Amanda says. “If our testing shows that someone is a cochlear implant candidate, we will then refer them for a medical examination. To give the patient time to heal, they will come back to our office about a month after the device is implanted to have their device activated and programmed.”

The quality of hearing that cochlear implants provide has improved significantly over the years, with a recent study reporting that 95% of patients say they were satisfied to very satisfied.

At first activation, patients sometimes say the sound quality is unnatural or a little robotic or tinny, but that it greatly improves over the first few months, with the most improvement typically occurring in the first 3-6 months. Patients are encouraged to wear their cochlear implants for at least ten hours a day, but the more they wear it, the better their outcome will be. If their eyes are open, their ears should be on.

The cochlear devices are covered by most insurances and can last 20 years to a lifetime.

           High-Tech Testing

Testing for cochlear implant candidacy is different than a standard hearing test. “Unlike a regular hearing exam, we test a patient with their hearing aids on, and only after verifying that the aids are functioning optimally for their loss,” Amanda says. “If a person’s word understanding is at or below 60% with their hearing aids, they can be a cochlear implant candidate. Due to significant advances in technology, the criteria has changed over time and more patients can benefit from cochlear implants than ever before.”

At my practice, becoming connected and making a positive difference in the lives of people who suffer from hearing loss and their families is the mission.

A question frequently asked by the loved ones of our patients is how they can best communicate. First, it is important to understand that someone with hearing loss, even with hearing devices, can struggle to hear conversations in different situations. Also, processing sounds with hearing loss requires more “brain power” and can be tiring and taxing, resulting in what’s known as listening fatigue.

I personally have hearing loss and have for years worn hearing aids. Here are some tips both my husband and I have found helpful in avoiding communication breakdowns and unnecessary frustration:

Always face the person when speaking.

Make sure the room you are in is well lit.

Don’t talk to someone from another room or part of the house.

Try to lessen background noise or distractions like the TV.

            Get their attention before talking.

Avoid covering your face or mouth when speaking.

Speak clearly and distinctly, without overexaggerating words.

Try to speak at a slower, natural pace.

If something is misheard, try rephrasing what was said.

We hope you find these tips helpful. They really can be life-changing.

It can be sad and frustrating knowing someone is obviously struggling with hearing loss but won’t seek help. Hearing loss affects their physical, social and mental well-being.

Here are a few myths we see, along with corresponding reality checks:

Myth: I cannot afford hearing aids.
Reality:

Many insurance plans help to cover hearing aid costs. We also offer interest-free financing options that help to make cost more manageable. For individuals who truly cannot afford new hearing aids, we often have donated devices available to fit for a small fee. Lastly, we offer over-the-counter (OTC) devices. However, it is recommended you let us test your hearing before fitting yourself so we can rule out any treatable conditions. The bottom line is, whatever it takes, we work with our patients to get them the help they need to hear better.

Myth: I don’t want the stigma of looking old with hearing aids.
Reality:

Hearing aids today are virtually undetectable. They are smaller than ever. Not to mention they are becoming more acceptable and even desirable to younger generations due to their cool capabilities, including connecting to Bluetooth devices.

Myth: The quality of hearing is so poor through hearing aids, why even bother?
Reality:

Hearing aids are not the same as they were even five years ago. The technological advancements are impressive. Hearing in background noise is one of the biggest challenges hearing loss brings, but we have made tremendous strides in improving hearing in this type of environment. We always offer the latest hearing aid technology. The newest product is equipped with Auracast technology allowing you to stream audio from public locations right through your hearing devices including airports, movie theaters, and places of worship.

My family and I just returned from a wonderful northwestern road trip where we visited the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Grant Teton and eventually Yellowstone.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, especially for our seven-year-old son. The more than 3,500 miles of mountainous vistas, emerald-green meadows, waterfalls, geysers, hot springs and hiking trails were amazing sights to behold. Looking back on it now, though, the sounds were every bit as magical. We experienced wolves howling, prairie dogs squealing and buffalo grunting. The hikes were a real escape, with the soothing backdrop sounds of rushing rapids, bubbling mudpots, and spewing geysers.

Whether on vacation or engaging with their everyday environment, I hope people appreciate their hearing as much as I do. This “invisible sense” is an important part of how you interpret the world around you.

At Amanda’s Family Hearing, fellow audiologist Dr. Kevin Burkitt and I perform comprehensive diagnostic testing. First, we do a consultation, going over the patient’s medical history. We then diagnose the type and severity of their loss and recommend the best course of treatment.

Oftentimes, we see patients who have self-diagnosed a hearing problem and bought over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. Not only could the quality of hearing they get with these devices be sub-standard, but they could also miss a more serious medical condition.

Additionally, if hearing loss is improperly treated, it could lead to more devastating effects later on, such as early onset dementia or depression.

Our goal is to have everyone fully enjoy every sound they hear for the best quality of living.

PROTECTING YOUR SENSE OF HEARING IS VITAL, THAT’S WHY DR. AMANDA BARBUR, OF AMANDA’S FAMILY HEARING, OFFERS THESE TIPS, TRICKS AND DEVICES TO HELP YOU DO JUST THAT

After becoming an audiologist, and for years working at the former MaryAnn’s Family Hearing, Dr. Amanda Barbur purchased the practice in 2020 and it became Amanda’s Family Hearing.

“I chose to be in private practice so I can treat each individual the way I feel is most appropriate,” she says. “Being a smaller practice also allows us to give each patient the time and attention they need and deserve, and really get to know them and their needs. We love that our relationships with patients are life-long and enriching.”

           Protecting this Precious Sense

Dr. Barbur explains preventing damage to your hearing is something everyone can do. How loud is too loud?

“Exposure to noises above 85 decibels (the sound of an idling bulldozer) for a prolonged period can produce NIHL, or noise-induced hearing loss,” she says. “If you’re listening to music through earphones and someone can hear your music from an arm’s length away or more, it’s too loud.”

For some people the hearing can return afterward, but with each recurring exposure, it may bounce back less and less, often becoming permanent and irreparable.

Dangerous levels of sound can come from places like rock concerts or noisy workplaces. The good news is damage is preventable. Along with fellow audiologist Dr. Kevin Burkitt, Dr. Barbur can take an impression of a patient’s ear for the best-fit custom molded earplugs.

“There’s a night-and-day difference in terms of effectiveness and sophistication between generic and custom-molded earplugs,” she says.

She reports they work with highly specialized products suited to the noise. For instance, for patients who are hunters or shooters, they offer a smart product that reduces the loud gunshot sound yet allows them to hear safe sounds and conversation.

Swimmers can benefit from custom-molded earplugs if they have a history of ear infections or “swimmer’s ear.”

For musicians, they offer plugs with special filters to allow minimal change in sound quality so that music is still enjoyable yet safe. “Recently, I am seeing more and more band students purchasing these plugs, which I think is wonderful.” she says. “Being a musician myself throughout most of my student life, and now a current hearing aid user, I can really appreciate these kids and their parents taking the initiative to save their hearing.”

           Why Testing Matters

Though there are a myriad of reasons you could be suffering from hearing loss, Dr. Barbur points out there’s only one proper way to get a diagnosis: an evaluation by a licensed audiologist.

“Unfortunately, hearing loss could be caused by many different factors, such as ear wax buildup, or it can be related to other serious conditions such as acoustic tumors or middle ear pathologies,” she says. “People who self-diagnose their loss as ‘just part of getting old’ and go out and buy one-size-fits-all hearing aids could be putting themselves in harm’s way and missing a more serious issue. More often than not, over-the-counter hearing aids are inadequate and improperly self-fit leading to disappointment, wasted money, and further deterioration of the ability to communicate with others.”

She says people often ask her at what age they should have a baseline hearing test, and her answer is any age.

“The sooner we find out what’s going on, the better the outcomes,” she says. “Hearing loss unchecked can lead to falls, social isolation, depression and even early-onset dementia. Most times, hearing loss is so gradual it’s difficult to detect. It’s usually the people around you who notice first.”

At the first visit, they begin by getting to know the patient and learning about their medical history and activities, then through an exam they use an otoscope or video otoscope to inspect the ears to look for obstructions or any other abnormalities in the ear canal. Next, they perform a hearing test to assess the type and extent of impairment and recommend the best course of treatment.

Dr. Barbur and her staff are passionate about education. You’ll find them participating in all sorts of community events and health fairs, like Senior Day at Great Lakes Mall and visiting senior care facilities throughout Lake County.

“Our mission has always been to serve this community,” she says. “Come hear with us.”

Hearing is an important part of life and there are many risks of untreated hearing loss, including social isolation, depression, job-related issues, relationship struggles, imbalance, and now even earlier onset dementia. However, recent research shows the risks of dementia are lower for hearing aid users.

It is never too early to get a hearing test, but you should get checked at least by 45 years of age. Hearing loss often occurs gradually and may go unnoticed for years. It is not uncommon for my first-time hearing aid users to be surprised at how much they have been missing once they hear it again.

People with associated comorbidities and other risk factors are more at risk for hearing loss. These include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, dizziness or balance issues, loud noise exposure, tinnitus and smoking.

Hearing loss can be frustrating and downright exhausting due to a condition known as auditory fatigue. When you can’t hear everything, your brain has to first work to fill in the pieces of conversation it missed. Only after that can it then process and comprehend what was said. It’s like the brain is working overtime. This is often why people with hearing loss socially withdraw, because it’s just too tiring to go out and socialize.

I love when my patients tell me how happy they are after they’ve decided to seek professional help and are fit with hearing aids. I’ve never had a patient say they regret making the step toward better hearing, and in turn a better quality of life. So don’t wait and come hear with us.

           AN UPDATE FROM AMANDA

I would like to share (another) recent experience with you that I had this past month that gave me a renewed sense of appreciation for hearing and Audiology!

As some of you know, I took a few days from the office to attend an Audiology conference in Phoenix this past month. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and especially to those who rescheduled so that I could take time away from the office!

The conference itself was great. It was specifically for Audiology business owners. So, it was a great opportunity for me as a newer owner to learn from and share ideas with others with more experience. It was a wonderful learning opportunity!

Unfortunately, the trip getting to Arizona was not the adventure I was planning for! What was supposed to be an 8:45AM flight with an 11:30AM arrival ended up being an 11:30PM flight with a 3:30AM arrival.

It was such a long day!

I will say I met some very nice people. During a 15-hour flight delay you tend to get to know those who are on your plane quite well. I had such a nice conversation with an older gentleman at Cleveland Airport. He must have felt comfortable with me because he really opened up to me. He told me all about his life, including how he is a tennis player and on his way to a tennis match now. And with tears in his eyes, he told me all about his wife whom he lost within the last couple years. It was really a moving conversation, and I sensed it did him good as well.

So why did this give me a new appreciation for hearing? Let me tell you…

I was not planning to be without my checked luggage for more than 5 hours that day and didn’t think it was necessary to bring my hearing aid charger with me to the airport in my carry-on. I figured that I would get to my hotel room with plenty of battery life to spare!

Unfortunately, because I had my hearing aids on since 5AM that morning, by the time I got onto my flight that night I was hearing my low battery warning. It’s a sound that can make your stomach turn! I was just hoping and praying my batteries would last me to my hotel. But as luck had it, halfway through the flight one went dead. I knew it was only a matter of time before my other one decided to go which as well it did shortly after.

I felt totally unable to communicate with others. When the flight attendant came by asking about drinks, I was just guessing from experience what she was asking me, but it was such an uncomfortable situation to be in.

After we deboarded the plane early the next morning, I went to baggage claim to grab my luggage. As we were all waiting for our luggage in Arizona (which seemed to feel like forever), I just stood by myself trying to avoid any type of communication with anybody because I knew I wouldn’t be able to carry on a conversation. I even saw my tennis player friend, but had to avoid him, because I knew he’d want to strike up a conversation. I felt terrible, especially after we had such a nice connection earlier.

When I got into my Uber, I had to tell my driver right away that my hearing aids had died, and that I could not hear what she was saying. She was more than understanding and did not take offense to it, but this was just so unlike me. Again, I felt terrible.

Lastly, I finally made it to my hotel at 4:30AM. I had to check in at the front desk. Once again, I had to tell the receptionist that I was struggling to hear what she was saying. She was very understanding and did her best to speak a little louder and clearer. But again, another unpleasant situation!

I was so happy to be in my room! I immediately pulled out my charger from my luggage and plugged my aids in.

It has probably been years since I’ve been in a situation like this one, and it was just awful! Not being able to hear others is so isolating. It’s like trying to find your way out of a maze in a dark room.

So that was how I gained a renewed love and appreciation for my own hearing aids, as well as my job as an audiologist! Being able to help you and others avoid these types of uncomfortable situations and enjoy connecting with others is everything. We can sometimes take hearing for granted, but it is what truly connects us to the world and others around us. Hearing helps us form relationships with others, sometimes even complete strangers!

So, I hope this story inspires you just as much as it does me and renews your appreciation for the sounds and connections of your life too!

Is ear wax really bad for you?

People usually consider ear wax to be an icky, unsightly bodily secretion they are quick to get rid of.

In reality, this protective, hardworking unsung hero serves several beneficial functions to your ears. It traps stray dirt, dust and debris from entering your ear canal. The anti-microbial chemical composition of ear wax is slightly acidic, so not only does it inhibit the growth of viruses and bacteria, but it also repels bugs from flying into your ear, as the scent is unpleasant to them.

With so much going for it, in general, we recommend people stop worrying about removing ear wax and leave it where it’s supposed to be.

For the record, the proper way to clean your ears is with a warm, damp washcloth just around the outside of the ear.

Never clean the inside of your ears with a cotton swab. It’s a shock to us when a patient tells us he or she is still engaging in this dangerous practice. All it accomplishes is to push ear wax further into your ear, and you can damage the ultra-sensitive mechanisms by doing this.

Ear wax only becomes a problem if it becomes too dry or too wet or there’s too little or too much of it. Too little can cause dry, itchy ears and leave you more susceptible to infection, and too much can build up and create a symptom of hearing loss. Oftentimes we see patients who think they are suffering from hearing loss, then after we perform a cleaning, find out their hearing is fine.

If you think you have an excessive amount, come see us. As licensed doctors of audiology, we routinely perform cleanings and can make an evaluation as to whether ear wax is the issue or there are other medical conditions happening. Come hear with us.

Meet Ruby

I wanted to share an experience I had earlier this week. If you did not know, my family recently rescued a puppy this past summer. Her name is Ruby. She is now about 6 months old, and a cute little ball of energy!

She just recently graduated from her first 6-week puppy training class. Her last session was this week, and I did something different that I wish I had done the entire time.

The room that training takes place in is quite large and reverberant. At times the teacher is not facing you, other dogs start barking, and sounds echo throughout the area. It is really a tough listening environment to be in, especially if you have hearing loss!

For the last class I decided to try using my remote microphone accessory. I simply asked the teacher to clip the small microphone to her shirt at the beginning of class, and I connected to the mic by pressing the button on my hearing aid.

           WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

I received SO much more out of the class, and in turn so did my puppy! It was also a lot more enjoyable, because I did not have to struggle to hear the entire time.

For Ruby’s next round of classes I will definitely be asking the teacher to wear it every… single… time!

And she was more than happy to help me out.

Remote mics are great for classes, in restaurants, and in the car among many other situations.

If there are times where you are struggling to hear a specific person talking, then you should definitely try a remote microphone.

I would love to demo one for you in the office. Just ask me!

           Until Next Time!

With the holidays here, we look forward to gathering with family and friends we might not often see during the year.

I hope people use this as a time to detect signs of hearing loss from those who might be around their table, especially older folks.

Since losing your hearing can be a very gradual process, many people might not realize it’s happening to them. Numerous studies have shown links between hearing loss and social isolation, dementia, and even depression. Early detection and treatment are essential to a person’s long-term health and wellness.

If you notice someone is asking you to repeat things often, not following conversations, giving inappropriate answers, or you notice they seem withdrawn, you’re doing your loved one a favor by mentioning they should see an audiologist.

In some cases, even after hearing loss is suspected, people avoid having their hearing checked because of cost.

At our practice, we offer several options to help make costs more manageable. We offer interest-free financing and a leasing program. We also maximize a patient’s insurance coverage and accept Medicare Advantage Plans. We always verify each patient’s insurance to make sure they get all the benefits.

If someone is unable to afford hearing aids, we do our best to find ways to help them hear better, even if it is fitting used or reconditioned hearing aids that have been donated. We believe everyone deserves to hear better, and we want to help make that possible.

The treatment for tinnitus

At some point in their lives, about one in five people will experience tinnitus. This perceived noise in the ears that doesn’t correspond to an external sound can be related to hearing loss or other issues such as noise exposure, high blood pressure, earwax buildup or certain medications.

Tinnitus is sometimes the brain’s way of compensating for the sound it isn’t getting due to hearing loss. Other times, it can result from a more serious medical condition that needs to be addressed. Tinnitus can be any perceived sound such as a ringing, buzzing, clicking or hissing. In some cases, it can become so severe it is difficult to concentrate or sleep.

As doctors of audiology, we are well educated on tinnitus and the different treatment methods available. The first action is to get to the root cause. We obtain a thorough medical history followed by an otoscopic examination of the ear. We will remove ear wax if necessary, such as if it is obstructing the view of your eardrum, or if it may be impeding your hearing. After that, we administer a comprehensive hearing test to determine if there is loss, and what type and severity it is. If there is a hearing loss, it is common for amplification with hearing aids to not only help you hear better, but to also reduce tinnitus significantly.

For the cases we encounter where amplification is not appropriate or does not offer enough relief, there are other approaches we can take to suppress or mask the tinnitus such as a combination of counseling and ear worn masking devices.

Ringing in the ears is not something people should let go in hopes it will improve on its own. We’re here to help. Come hear with us.

Over-the-counter hearing aids

Recently, the FDA finalized a rule that allows people aged 18 or over, with a perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, to buy over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids directly without being seen by a medical professional or obtaining a prescription.

While we’re happy that more people will have access, there are reasons it’s recommended to see a medical professional, first. You shouldn’t treat any condition unless you have identified what it is. There are often underlying issues that cause hearing loss. Sometimes ear wax removal is all that is needed, which we can help with. Other times it may be a more concerning issue that needs further medical attention, such as an ear infection or a tumor.

We do not encourage self-treatment of any hearing loss and highly recommend seeing an audiologist prior to purchasing an OTC hearing aid, especially if you have any of the following symptoms: tinnitus, dizziness or vertigo, ear pain or drainage, sudden hearing loss or asymmetric hearing loss. Audiologists perform comprehensive hearing testing to assess the type and degree of impairment. After we have a proper diagnosis, we create a treatment plan and provide ongoing follow-up care.

Only about 16% of adults with hearing loss use a hearing aid. That’s a number we are dedicated to changing for the folks here in Lake County and beyond.

We strive to educate the community and spread awareness about hearing loss and the importance of seeking help.

The average person waits seven to 10 years after they have been diagnosed or affected by hearing loss to pursue treatment. That’s a statistic we hope to reverse. The sooner hearing loss is treated, the better the long-term outcome.

As certified and licensed Doctors of Audiology, we have eight years of higher education with four of those specific to the field of audiology, which includes both hearing and balance-related disorders. At our clinic, our primary focus is diagnosing and treating hearing loss. We are also required to maintain several hours of continuing education annually to keep our licenses and certifications current.

Through comprehensive diagnostic testing, we can identify pathologies of the ear that may be causing a person’s hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Most of the time they are a normal part of aging. However, sometimes they may be a result of a more serious condition. As audiologists, we are able to detect these issues and refer patients to the appropriate professionals for further evaluation when necessary. On the other hand, hearing loss could be caused by something as simple as a buildup of ear wax, which we can often remove at our clinic.

Have you noticed there has been an increase in talk about over-the-counter hearing (OTC) devices since the president’s executive order that took place last summer? Part of that order was to create FDA approved OTC hearing devices for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss for purchase without needing to go through a medical professional. Currently, there are still no

OTC hearing aids. The FDA is still currently reviewing this option.

Many audiologists including myself have mixed feelings regarding OTC devices. Under best practice, a person should have a comprehensive hearing test and be properly diagnosed before any type of treatment is given. Underlying medical conditions should be ruled out prior to using any self-fit devices. The only way to help people avoid mistreatment is to educate them about the importance of seeing a medical professional when it comes to hearing loss and other related problems.

Most of you reading this are probably our patients and are receiving the care that you should, which is wonderful! However, there are still many who are struggling to hear conversations, but are hesitant to see a medical professional for fear of needing hearing aids. Maybe this sounds like somebody you know? We may have a an option that meets them halfway!

Currently, in order to purchase a set of these devices from anywhere, a person need to show proof that they have had a diagnostic hearing test. This gives audiologists an opportunity to discuss their results and provide appropriate recommendations. Although the JEP devices are less expensive than conventional hearing aids, nobody wants to spend money on something that won’t work for them.

For decades, people have been telling teens to turn down their loud music. With the advent of earbuds and headphones, many parents are wondering if their children are keeping the noise at a safe level.

As certified and licensed Doctors of Audiology, the question we are often asked is: How loud is too loud?

Generally, sounds at or above 85 decibels for prolonged periods of time can damage your hearing. To give you a reference point, that’s equivalent to a lawn mower, leaf blower or noisy restaurant. A loud sporting event can spike to 120 decibels, and an ambulance siren or gunshot can be as loud as 140 decibels. Hearing protection is strongly recommended in these situations.

There are several helpful smartphone apps that measure decibels, such as Decibel X, that can tell you exactly how loud a specific sound or environment is. If you need hearing protection but aren’t sure which kind, we can help you. The type and style you need depends on your circumstances. When you visit us, we’ll discuss your situation and recommend the appropriate type. We offer over-the-counter hearing protection as well as custom fit.

When listening to music through ear buds or headphones, a good rule of thumb is, if others can hear your music at arm’s length—or about three feet away—it’s too loud. Some brands of headphones and earbuds are manufactured not to go above safe levels. Be sure to check the product specifications, especially if you are purchasing for younger ones who may not be able to regulate the volume as well.

Just coming off the holidays, sitting around the table with family and friends, did you notice any of them being particularly quiet or even avoiding conversations? Perhaps they needed things repeated or rephrased?

This is common among individuals with hearing loss. Even mild hearing loss can make communicating difficult, especially in the presence of background noise, such as at family gatherings.

Fortunately, we live in an age of digital technology that is constantly improving. The first digital hearing aids came out more than 25 years ago. Today, they are highly sophisticated little computers. Don’t be fooled by a hearing aid’s tiny size, as they are jam-packed with high-end digital technology to give you the best hearing possible.

Hearing loss can occur at any age. The earlier loss is treated, the higher the probability that hearing aids will be helpful. Without proper stimulation, the brain can lose its ability to recognize sounds, making understanding speech significantly more difficult. MRI studies of the brain have shown that auditory deprivation in as little as three weeks can have neural consequences.

If we perform a comprehensive hearing test and determine hearing aids are the best route, we will discuss with each patient what technology best suits their needs. Our hearing aids can satisfy close to everyone’s needs and budgets. Don’t wait any longer to come hear with us.

As an individual with lifelong hearing loss who wears hearing aids, Dr. Amanda Barbur has a special understanding of what her patients are experiencing throughout their journey—the frustrations, challenges and even hesitation to find help.

“Although I was diagnosed with hearing loss in elementary school, I didn’t even try devices until I was in college,” says Dr. Barbur, who was born and raised in the area.

After becoming an audiologist in 2012, she worked at the former MaryAnn’s Family Hearing until purchasing the practice and renaming it Amanda’s Family Hearing in 2020.

To keep up with the growing practice, the team welcomed Dr. Anna Soennecken in January. A practicing audiologist for more than 20 years, she enjoys asking patients what their favorite sound is.

“Every patient is different, and we do a lot of counseling to pinpoint the best solutions for their unique lifestyle,” says Dr. Barbur.

The practice offers all the latest styles and brands of hearing aids, including Resound, Phonak and Starkey, most of which are Bluetooth-enabled and conveniently rechargeable.

“Hearing devices have become much more accurate and effective in providing a clearer, better quality of hearing over the years,” she says. “Areas such as background noise reduction and the ability to stream sound through your smartphone have made notable advancements for people. Devices are also much smaller than ever, barely detectable, and sit within the ear or just behind it.”

The audiologists service the gamut of hearing issues people need help with, including phones with captioning, custom earmolds made for musicians, custom swim ear plugs for adults and children, and they fit custom hearing protection.

           Treating Tinnitus

In addition to addressing hearing loss, the audiologists also work with patients who suffer from tinnitus.

“These phantom sounds, such as ringing or buzzing in the ears, could result in a mild annoyance or severely disrupt someone’s life,” she says. “Possible causes are head trauma, ear wax, medications and prolonged exposure to loud sounds.”

“Tinnitus can be a sign of hearing loss, and treatment with hearing devices often helps,” says Dr. Barbur. Beyond fitting ear-worn devices for relief, we help with education and counseling for tinnitus, which is one of the best treatments. Tinnitus can also be a sign of another underlying health condition that needs treatment so anyone with symptoms should, at the very least, have a hearing test.”

Whatever the hearing condition, the ladies are passionate about community outreach. They do health fairs, lunch and learn seminars and visit senior centers to spread the word, and also travel to area nursing homes to treat patients.

“We consider our relationships with patients to be lifelong,” says Dr. Barbur. “Our mission is to serve this community. Education plays a vital role in that. We have so many tools we use, printing out written instructions for visual reinforcement, and we can recommend apps to practice auditory skills.”

She notes the average person waits eight years to do anything about their hearing loss.

“This is something we’re trying to change here in Lake County,” she adds. “Human beings are by nature social creatures and the social isolation that comes with hearing loss can be devastating.”
