Greetings from Amanda's Family Hearing!
Hello and Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We are excited to see what 2020 brings us as well as you, our patients!
Use It or Lose It
In the audiology world, there is something called Auditory Deprivation. To put it simply, it occurs when an individual’s brain loses its ability to interpret sounds due to lack of auditory stimulation from untreated hearing loss. It is common for someone with this to say something along the lines of, “I hear you, but I just can’t understand you.”
There is significant research that shows the effects of auditory deprivation on people who have left hearing loss untreated. The results consistently show that the ability to recognize and understand speech can, over time, diminish, significantly. This is why it is so important to wear your hearing aids every day as much as you can! You should never just wear them occasionally or in certain situations. Your brain is like a muscle. It needs constant and consistent auditory stimulation in order to continue to recognize and attach meaning to sound input.
Research also shows that the longer the auditory deprivation occurs, the more difficult it is for your brain to “re-learn” and interpret sounds later, even if you eventually do get hearing aids.
So, the important takeaway from this article is simple; if you have hearing aids, wear them (consistently)! For those of you who have been told by an audiologist that you should wear hearing aids but are on the fence about getting them, please consider giving them a chance! Their benefit far outweighs the cost of losing your ability to enjoy socializing and connecting with others!
Behind-the-Scenes at MAFH
Thank you to all of our client’s for being patient with us and allowing us to take a couple of days away from the office last month to attend an important and highly beneficial meeting in Washington State! Everything we do is to improve the business and help us to serve you better! We basically discussed and analyzed every aspect of the business! We learned what we are doing well, as well as ways we can improve, because there’s always room for that!
So again, thank you so much for your patience and understanding!
After going all the way there, my husband and I just couldn’t leave without seeing Mount St. Helens! What an amazing view.
Take care until next time!
Sincerely,

Amanda
